Haemorrhages in a pig carcass: Don’t panic!

With the recent detection of cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in wild boars in Belgium, anyone can see that there is a certain risk of introduction of this disease into our territory. Also Classical Swine Fever (CSF) might be introduced. Therefore it is essential that all the actors involved in the pig sector are trained and alert. Two essential aspects for the control of these diseases are biosecurity and a good system of passive surveillance that ensures an early diagnosis.

In a  hybrid breed, 6 months old, pig carcass several irregular, nodular, subcutaneous lesions were observed in the dorsal region that. Upon section the subcutis was thickened, with an increased consistency and of whitish color.

Black spots in the lungs of a pig

In a 6-month-old, cross-breed pig carcass, multiple small well-defined black nodules were observed, some of them with a whitish center, distributed throughout the whole lung parenchyma. When sectioned,  the nodules showed a caseose-like content in the center. On the skin, after scalding,  black coloured lesions were seen at the level of the posterior right limb. (more…)

In a male, cross breed, 6 months old, pig carcass multiple, multifocal,  erythematous lesions were observed some of which  with concentric circles morphology. Generalized lymphadenopathy was also observed with increased size and redness of the lymph nodes. (more…)

Ulcerative dermatitis in a sow

In a 3 year old sow, multiple multifocal, irregular, wet, reddened areas, in the skin of the flanks, abdomen and hind limbs were observed during the ante-mortem inspection. The affected areas had alopecia and whitish vesicles surrounded the ulcers. (more…)
