In two hen carcases proliferative crusty skin lesions were observed multifocaly distributed across the body surface. Meat inspectors submitted samples to rule out Marek’s disease.

Histopathological analysis evidenced ulcerative dermatitis lesions, with crusts and hyperplasia of the epidermis at the edges of the ulcers. Also, the presence of eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies) was noticed. These lesions are pathognomonic of avian pox (poxviruses).
