Canadian researchers from CRIPA visit IRTA-CReSA as part of a scientific exchange project between Quebec and Catalonia

IRTA-CReSA recently hosted the visit of researchers Dr. Jamie Ahloy Dallaire and Dr. Pablo Valdés Donoso, members of the Research Center in Porcine and Avian Infectiology (CRIPA) in Quebec. This visit, which took place on February 27 and 28, is part of the researcher exchange project promoted by the Ministère des Relations Internationales et de la Francophonie (MRIF) of the Quebec government, within the 12th Quebec-Catalonia project call for 2024-2026.

During their stay, the Canadian researchers had the opportunity to learn first-hand about the research on animal health and welfare being conducted in Catalonia. On the first day, they visited a technologically advanced finishing farm in Batallé, where various types of sensors are used, ranging from electronic feeders to environmental sensors and cameras for monitoring animal behavior.

On the second day, the researchers gave a seminar at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), where they shared their advancements in the application of innovative technologies in animal health with researchers and PhD students. The seminar talks were titled “Building a rugged pig: determinants of robustness with respect to animal welfare”, by Dr. Ahloy, and “AI-AgroHealth platform (PIAAS) and the use of Artificial Intelligence at the service of animal Health”, by Dr. Valdés, showcasing their research progress in applying new technologies to improve health management and animal welfare. Additionally, they held meetings with various research groups from IRTA-CReSA to exchange ideas and establish future collaborations.

A strategic alliance for innovation in animal health

The project “Strengthening food security and sustainable animal production” is led by Mariela Segura, a professor at the Université de Montréal and director of CRIPA, and Natàlia Majó-Masferrer, head of the Animal Health program at IRTA-CReSA and professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Furthermore, it has financial support from the biotechnology company EVAH Corp and its subsidiary EVAH Europe, ensuring a greater transfer of scientific knowledge to the productive sector.
