First detection of West Nile Virus in a bird of prey in Catalonia
For more than 10 years IRTA-CReSA has carried out the diagnosis and technical assessment of the West Nile virus surveillance program in Catalonia as a service by the DARP. This program was initiated with the objective of detecting early the circulation of West Nile virus (WNV), a virus that can affect wild birds and equids and is transmitted by mosquito vectors to human beings. Why chamois go Blind?
Infectious keratoconjunctivitis is a highly contagious ocular disease that causes inflammation of the cornea and the conjunctiva, typically caused by Mycoplasma conjunctivae in wild and domestic caprines (Caprinae Subfamily). It is an old-known disease considered of least concern in domestic small ruminants because its generally sporadic occurrence, self-limiting course, and because it does not cause mortality if outbreaks are properly managed. A significant step forward in the fight against african swine fever
African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly lethal hemorrhagic disease for domestic pigs and European wild boards. ASF is a disease of mandatory declaration to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and is caused by African Swine Virus (ASFV), a rather complex and large virus against which there is no treatment, nor vaccine, thus relying for its control in its early detection and slaughtering of infected and potentially exposed animals. We can do this because we have a level 3 biocontainment unit that allows us to work directly and safely with the infectious agents that cause tuberculosis. From the microbes of chickens to our plate
Campylobacter is one of the main responsible bacteria for foodborne diarrheal diseases. Most of the cases of diarrhea are associated with the consumption of food, mainly poultry meat contaminated with Campylobacter, hence, this bacterium represents a problem for food security of first order. Unlike Salmonella, Campylobacter is not part of the popular vocabulary, nor does it appear regularly in the media, although it is one of the pathogens responsible for the largest number of cases of diarrhea in humans in the European Union. The Middle East respiratory syndrome or MERS is an infectious disease caused by a coronavirus, named MERS-CoV. This virus was first detected in Saudi Arabia in 2012. BCG tuberculosis vaccine is safe for use in goats
Vaccination of lifestock is increasingly being considered as a long-term strategy for the control of tuberculosis. In Spain, goat tuberculosis, mainly caused by the Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium caprae is responsible for significant economic losses due to trade restrictions and requires the sacrifice of all animals in many of the infected herds. New vaccine against Middle East respiratory syndrome virus (MERS) tested on dromedary camels
An international research project with the involvement of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Animal Health Research Centre (IRTA-CReSA), has designed a vaccine shown to be effective in protecting dromedaries against the coronavirus (CoV) that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). This vaccine may reduce animal-to-animal and animal-to-human infections by significantly reducing nasal excretion of the virus, and could be also tested for the protection of persons at greater risk of infection by the virus. Presented Bernardo Bello-Orti’s PhD thesis: Haemophilus parasuis host-pathogen interactions in the respiratory tract
In the veterinary field, Glässer’s disease is a common disease that leads to considerable economic losses. This disease is caused by the bacterium Haemophilus parasuis. Many studies have focused in understanding the factors involved in disease outcome, but the pathogenesis of this bacterium is not completely understood yet. Different H. parasuis strains exist, ranging from non-virulent to highly virulent. Virulent strains have mechanisms to produce damage in the host, while nonvirulent strains only colonize the upper respiratory tract and are unable to cause disease. (read more) |

Described a novel plasmid bearing resistance to beta-lactams
in Haemophilus parasuis
A collaborative study between Dr Virginia Aragón, IRTA researcher at CReSA, and Dr Junkal Garmendia, CSIC researcher at the Institute of Agrobiotechnology from Navarra, has described a new plasmid in H. parasuis bearing resistance to beta-lactams, such as penicillins and cephalosporins. CReSA researchers have tested for the first time and successfully the new vaccine, designed at the Jenner Institute (UK). A new discovery in the virulence mechanisms of the porcine pathogen Haemophilus parasuis
CReSA’s researchers have found that Haemophilus parasuis can utilize the sialic acid from the host to avoid recognition by the immune system and be able to cause disease. Despite control campaigns carried out since 1956, Bovine tuberculosis eradication has not yet been achieved and prevalence has remained between 1.6% and 1.8%.
